Cooking DS Style
The Nintendo DS Lite was released in 2006 superseding it's already very popular predecessor the Nintendo DS.  Since that time, Nintendo have sold  10's of millions of DS Lites to very happy recipients... my 9 year old son (Baxter) being one of them.

Since the introduction of Super Cards and M3 storage cards that are compatible with the DS Lite,  coupled with a plethora of Homebrew (Non main stream game software) sites on the internet, game downloads are easier to come by at minimal or no cost to Mummy  and Daddy, but that's another story.

Enter the Cooking Guide for DS... My birthday wasn't  long ago and my son decided he'd find me something to play on DS.  He gave me a whole list of games to choose from, but one caught my eye... a cooking guide that not only gave you the recipe, but went through step by step, from  ingredients required, preparing, cooking and then serving.  So download he did, oblivious to the fact that this was the start of Baxters cooking adventures.

Once you see something productive come from this device, it makes the initial cost pale into insignificance. What better way to enter  the teenage years  than to learn the basics of cooking from your DS Lite. This is real, this is creating, this is learning to be self sufficient and independent, and best of all, he had fun doing it. Already, Baxter has a repertoire of favourite dishes from this thing, and with a little help from Mummy and Daddy sourcing the correct ingredients; it's just too easy for the young fella.

Take a look at Bax tackling Teryaki chicken below.

Too easy! I love the bit that includes clean-up too. Does that instruction come with the DS (ha ha)?

I will manage the all new " Young Baxter's" cooking show and career for a nominal fee Say 45%. . We will go international, have his own brand , tv show,------------ YB cooking utensils, YB olive oil ,YB tee shirts.YB cheese,YB designer sunnies, there is no end to this trip. And Matt we will even employ you, as you did such a great job setting up the links, music, and one liners (I usually get Luke my 16 year old to do stuff that tricky) PS Who is that mystery woman in the white tee shirt in the back ground? Look forward to the next episode Peter Keon

Peter, the mystery girl was Baxters assistant, she is a lovely lady and we got along very well (shh.. don't tell the wife). Anyway, the YB plan sounds reasonable, 45% sounds a bit high but we can work on that. Thanks for your thoughts Pete, will have another episode up soon.

Bax ! Thats looks great! A job well done, and judging by the expression's it won everyone over. Now, you'll have to do it more often eh? Keep those batteries charged... I particularly like the shot of your DS on the choppin board surrounded by utensils, very arty... Younes suggest's you come and cook us a lunch one time...

And to Steve above... I wish! One step at a time I suppose.

That was great! I was seriously glad I watched it; I had a smile on my face from start to finish. Isnt it amazing how much a person grows through involvment with food? (not that I have children) but i anticipate that should I have them, I will certainly involve him/her in every aspect of food, cooking and meal preparation. Too many kids are 'fussy eaters' but in my humble opinion (I have 22 neices & nephews as my test subjects). I think this can all be rectified by getting them involved at a young age... Whether it be growing their own 'dinner' or helping to roll the dough for a batch of cookies... Dont shelter a childs tastebuds...Ok, omit the chillis! Growing up in my house, the kitchen was the 'heart' of the home... These days the heart of the home is in front of the nearest plasma... Bring your kids into the kitchen (or in my case, hapless girlfriends who battle with a simmer sauce in a jar) share the love... The cooking love that is!

Thanks for your thoughts Tracey, I must say, Baxter gets his fair share of Plasma action...but ever since he loaded this cooking guide, he's been cooking 1 meal for the entire family per week. He's big on easier chicken dishes like satay chicken and lemon chicken and is continually searching for more. Sensational!

Hi Baxter - that certainly looks delicious and very easy. Any chance that you can come to Kirks Sydney and make us some for lunch. I will do the washing up! Well done and keep up the good work.
