Ricotta cheese made from Northern Territory buffalo milk has won 2 prestigious prizes at the New Zealand Cheese Awards.
Cheese maker Richard Dorresteyn from Clevedon, near Auckland imported 60 top end buffalo's to make mozzarella and ricotta cheese.
His ricotta won both Champion Fresh Unripened Cheese and Champion New Cheese.
Buffalo research officer with the NT government Barry Lemcke says he's not surprised the cheese was highly awarded.
"The mozzarella is usually sort of a tennis ball size lump, it's rounded and it comes with the brine in a plastic bag and you just eat it straight away" he said.
'It's absolutely delicious"
